Meet The Horses
Wren
Beautiful “Wren” Once wild from the Warm Springs Reservation, calls The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch home. Due to having some food allergies, she’s a difficult keeper. It’s most important she be under the care of a team who knows how to care for her dietary needs. We honor Wren’s preference to stay wild, after being in the slaughter pipeline, we think she has earned that. She has a forever home with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch, where we can ensure her happiness and well-being.
Awesome
“Awesome” Is an off-the-track thoroughbred who had been severely mistreated, starved, and dumped in a kill pen.
After the rehabilitation process, there had been hope of his potential to be a rideable mount, however, he never seemed comfortable. Upon further research and listening to the horse he was examined and diagnosed with moderate to severe “Kissing Spines”, an extremely painful condition especially if not properly cared for. Awesome receives specialized care due to his condition and spends his days turned out with friends. Understandably, due to his history he can be unpredictable. Therefore, he has a forever home with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch where he will be properly cared for and catered to.
Heyoka
“Heyoka” Is a stunning previously Wild Mustang from the Warm Springs Reservation, who was rescued from the slaughter pipeline.
It became clear during the gentling process of Heyoka that although groundwork was going well, he is unfortunately not sound. Making him hard to place, or move forward with. Therefore, he has a forever home with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch.
We work hard to honor the equine, their preferences and their needs.
TinkerBell
Tinkerbell was rescued as a feral pony several years ago. Once rescued she was placed with the best home she could have had. She was very loved and doted on. Unfortunately, due to change in life circumstances she needed a soft place to land. Now, she spends her days as an emotional support friend to “Sancho”, soaking up the Central Oregon sun and always looking for a snack. She has a forever home with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch.
Sancho
“Sancho” The mini pony was abandoned in a field prior to rescue. Once saved it was quickly realized that he had some very costly procedures that needed to be addressed, one being needing gelded, which for him cost roughly $4,000.
Over time, we also realized Sancho requires extra attention after a few close medical calls.
He spends his days napping and playing with his best friend Tinkerbell. Sancho has a very loving, forever home with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch where he will be given the extra care and attention he needs everyday.
Nevada
Little “Nevada” was previously a Wild Mustang from the Warm Springs Reservation. She is a part of our rescue program due to being in the slaughter pipeline. We had hoped Nevada might potentially have been a rideable rescue horse, however, due to her very small stature she’s been difficult to place. For that reason she had a soft landing and a forever home here with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch.
Squiggles
Squiggles is a previously rideable rescue, who is now retired due to geriatric dentistry issues. She has a forever home with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch due to Special feeding needs that we can monitor closely, and continually provide her with the best quality life.
Prophet
Prophet was an owner surrender who had lived a rugged life as a ranch horse. He came to us with near Liver failure. With specialized nutrition, he now lives a happy life without liver issues. He’s an older Gentleman who we think has earned an easy life. He spends his days in the sun and visiting with friends. He has a forever home here with The Sanctuary at Varekai Ranch to live out the rest of his retired years with ease.
